Truth be told, Kakuzu had no idea where he’s from, what his parents looked like, or where the world suddenly made itself known to him at such a young age. You could torture him, add to his nice collection of buried stitches and scars on his lean body, and yet you can’t get anything from him. The man has no recorded past and that’s exactly how he likes it.

But pay him 100K and he’ll tell you the saddest tale known to man.

If you want tears, however, that’s going to cost 10K more.

Even if the word “past” brings up a blank space, Kakuzu could deduce from his earliest memories that the world wasn’t exactly kind to him. By the time he was twelve, he was already a skilled pick-pocket, snagging the watches of ignorant businessmen on the bullet trains. As he grew up, he discovered he had the knack of coming up with money when needed through any illegal means without getting caught. Unfortunately for him, his skills with money were his downfall in the early age of his life. Through an attempt for armed robbery, Kakuzu was thrown into the Japanese correctional facility in Tokyo for a good ten years of his life.

Even in jail, Kakuzu still managed to keep alive his skills in acquiring anything possible if there was payment involved. Those ten years went by rather fast and profitable, if he says so himself, and Kakuzu found himself back on the streets of Tokyo again with nothing to his name except the clothes on his back and the 50K yen in his back pocket.

Finding himself in a rare state of financial distress, Kakuzu decided to go clean and try to pick up an accounting job at a measly law firm. After being in the job for a couple of weeks, the manager of the firm found out about Kakuzu’s dirty past and promptly kicked him out, framing the tall, dark man with false accounts of theft. And it went on like this for a while, going in and out of jobs because of his marked up past or his lack of patience against co-workers who wouldn’t keep their mouths shut when he tried to concentrate. (Exactly what was it with women and their fetishes for scars?)

Sooner or later, Kakuzu stumbled upon Café Akatsuki and flatly told the host at the moment that he was an ex-convict who could handle money and strangle a man with a teapot.

Strangely enough, he was hired in minutes and already notified to be set to the task of handling the cashier and paychecks, with no one looking over his shoulder or asking about the strange scars that were visible above the high collar of the uniform suit.

And as long as none of them gave him a hard time about when payday was, Kakuzu was content with the job for now.
